CC. What is your Name? Do you have a nickname? What is your group's latest release?

VP. My name is Edvrard Pharel, my nickname is Vardypharel, some people call me "Ti Doc". The latest release of the group Lov' is the CD "Men Nou Papa" released in March 1999.

CC. To someone who never heard of you, how would you describe yourself and your music?

VP. I am a very cool guy with a strong personality and our music is as cool as I am.

CC. How would you evaluate the response of the public toward your music?

VP. So far it's very positive. Lov' is only 18 months old and we feel that the public appreciate our music.

CC. Haitian music receives very little international recognition, what do you think can help bring Compas & Haiti to an international audience?

VP. I only have one word for that question: Marketing.

CC. Do you have any regrets as a Musician? Was music your first love?

VP. I don't have any regrets as a musician and I thank God. My first love is medicine and music comes after.

CC. You Just released an Album, What is your favorite song, and why?

VP. I don't have a favorite song in the album, each song has a special meaning for me.

CC. Why did you choose this Style of Music: Compas?

VP. Because I grew up with compas and I am proud to be Haitian.

CC. What other Style of Music influenced you most?

VP. Spanish music (Salsa, Jazz latino etc…).

CC. Sweet micky, T-Vice, System Band seem to dominate the compas Scene? How do you view them as entertainers?

VP. They are very good entertainers, people have a very good time when they are playing.

CC. How do you describe your relations with other groups? Do you work with any other groups, exchanging ideas and experience?

VP. The relations with all the other groups are very nice and I try to give people (not only the musicians) the respect they deserve so I can have the one I deserve. I work a lot with other artists exchanging ideas and experience and I do a lot of studio work with them too.

CC. Who is your favorite Compas Artist?

VP. Andre "Dadou" Pasquet.

CC. What is your favorite TV Show?

VP. I am not a "TV person".

CC. What is your favorite Dish?

VP. Mais moulu a l'haitienne.

CC. Who do you think is the greatest sport figure of the past century?

VP. There are so many great figures in Sport that I think I can't name only one.

CC. Who do you think is the greatest Musician/ Group of this Decade?

VP. I would say the same thing for music too.

CC. Live CD's are everywhere now. Any opinion on the practice?

VP. It's a kind of marketing because most of the public really like Live CD's and buy them (original or bootleg).

CC. Zouk is slowly becoming a very popular style, given its roots, why do you think compas still fails to reach a similar level of popularity?

VP. As I said before, Marketing plays a big role in the music industry.

CC. What do you think is your greatest achievement?

VP. Beeing a father.

CC. What is Your Greatest Disappointment?

VP. None so far.

CC. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

VP. I see myself practicing medicine and continuing with my hobby which is music.

CC. If you were president for one day what would you do?

VP. I don't see myself as a president ( even for one day ) because I am not into politics.

CC. Who is your favorite entertainer?

VP. A Mexican actor/comedian named Hector Suarez.

CC. Did you play any sport growing up?

VP. Football (called soccer in the USA).

CC. What is your favorite instrument?

VP. Flute.

CC. How many instruments do you play?

VP. Percussion.

CC. What other types of music do you like? Are there any particular artists that you consider role models?

VP. I like all types of music, from roots to classical, I'm a music collector and I have different styles in my collection. I don't really have a role model.

CC. Do you have any kids? If so how many? Would you encourage them to follow your footsteps?

VP. I have two girls and of course I would encourage them to follow my footsteps.

CC. Is there anything you would like to say to the public?

VP. Believe and support the artists, not only the musicians but all the artists.

CC. A message to the children?

VP. Love and respect for everyone around them.

CC. What can we expect from you and your group in the near future?

VP. The second CD, some Gigs in Miami, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa and Haiti.

CC. Who are the permanent members of your group?

VP. Emmanuel Obas, Frantz Emile, Edner Charles Jr., Gabriel Catin, Jean Riche Damour, Roland Cameau, Jackenson Pierre, Patrick Legitime, Yvon Jerome.

CC. Where were you born?

VP. Les Cayes, Haiti.

CC. What is your religion?

VP. Catholic.

CC. What does the band Schedule looks like? Any upcoming tours?

VP. We will be in Haiti for the Carnival, we have offers for Miami and Haiti for the month of April, Boston, Montreal and Ottawa for the summer.

CC. How long has the group been in existence? Tell us about your highs and lows if any?

VP. The group has been in existence for 18 months. So far we are satisfied with what we have accomplished.

CC. What goals do you really want to achieve as a group? Have you reached them?

VP. We want people to appreciate our music and have a great time listening and seeing us on stage. So far, so good.

CC. What differentiate to you the new & old Generations of Compas Musicians?

VP. I can say that some of the new generation bands tend to use lot of technology on stage while the "old generation" is still performing with real instruments.

CC. How would you describe the Compas flavor that is unique to your Group?

VP. We mix different rhythms and styles to create the Lov' compas flavor.

CC. The Internet Is now considered the fastest way to reach a bigger Audience, How do you intend to take advantage of this media? Have you gotten any big contract as a result of the Internet?

VP. We are already on the Internet and we invite the public to visit our site at www.projectlov.com. Some promoters have already established contacts with us through our website.

CC. What do you think is the impact of videos in compas?

VP. I really think the music industry is based upon marketing and video is one of the best ways to reach the public.
